Safer Preston Gateway Initiative
Over 30 children, between the ages of 11 and 16, were removed from buses by Police at the Safer Preston Gateway Checks. These were for a variety of reasons such as smoking, spitting, swearing, playing loud music from mobile devices and placing feet on seats.
The Safer Preston checks
are a component of a wider, multi-agency strategy to reduce anti-social behaviour on buses, and within the community. The main theme is one of reassurance.
This initiative is fully complimented by the Safer Travel Unit strategy, which includes education via the national curriculum in schools, driver training, centralised incident reporting, acceptable behaviour agreements and a strategic response to reported incidents of anti-social behaviour with various partners, such as the Police, Council officials, bus operators and schools. The number of reported incidents to the Safer Travel Unit has fallen consistently, with last year resulting in a 15% decrease.
There have been 11 Gateway Checks in Preston since September 2006, of which 7 have been full partnership gateways involving the Police, Council officials and bus operator staff, and 4 were conducted using Safer Travel Unit staff alone. Over 4000 customers in Preston have been present when the Gateway Checks have been undertaken on their bus services. In addition over 500 children in Preston have received education so far this year from the Safer Travel Unit via its PHSE programme.
